I've started the process of looking for a replacement for my messenger bag, which is fine for taking a nap in, but which I've found wanting as my main carry-around. I carry too much for the single-strap to be comfortable, and it doesn't close reliably (which is unforgivable for a piece of luggage, IMHO, and surprising from L.L. Bean).

Right now I'm thinking of getting a backpack to carry a 15" laptop w/ powerbar, camera, ipod, a book, a magazine, a folder of papers, and my lunch (at least).

I've started by digging through my bookmarks for companies that produce good backpacks, and found the following:
