Concordia bans Facebook

Concordia bans Facebook. Concordia bans Facebook access on campus computers:

The Montreal university's desktop network is vulnerable to hackers who may be using the popular social networking site to access personal information, according to the school's information technology department. The school is concerned that the information could then be used to launch attacks on its systems.

The incident that seems to have set this off was that people received messages via Facebook claiming to be from the Concordia IT department, asking for usernames and passwords, and some 70 people complied.

Folks, the problem here isn't with Facebook.

While you might argue that students are (groundlessly) more likely to trust information coming at them via Facebook, the basic logic being applied here should result in all e-mail and other communications being blocked. And what is stopping the student from getting the same communications on another network? A far better approach would be to teach students how to evaluate the authenticity of incoming communications.

My guess is that this ban won't hold, and eventually someone will come to their senses and do the right thing.
