Wine, The Windows Emulator
After reading an update on the Wine project on Slashdot, I decided to check out the main Wine website. Nice idea, but unfortunately, it won't work. Microsoft, by the very complexity and enormity of the Windows OS, has made it virtually impossible for anyone to emulate the OS without having to invest a huge amount of resources in the undertaking. However, I think it's a tribute to the open source community that they've even come close. (I can't even always get Word to run on Win95, let alone on Linux...) I'd like to see an big corporation try to accomplish the same. As others have pointed out, it's too bad the Wine group didn't spend all that energy making cool native Linux apps. On the other hand, I'm sure with thier experience, all those Wine developers would make great Windows developers!   =)
