Meg Hourihan on her Starbucks latte dilemma, and on choosing between milk riddled with growth hormone (thankfully outlawed here in Canada, my god), ultrapasteurized milk (which has great shelf life but may be harder to digest), and organic milk.

I drink mostly ultrapasteurized (in glasses, not in my coffee), but never knew about the potential downsides. Time to make a change there, I think.

We also started purchasing milk from local producers. It comes in glass bottles, and is pasteurized, but not certified organic. The merchant swears that the stuff is fine, and that the organic certification here in Canada is so weak as to be worthless. (His suggestion: know your farmer.) However, bringing the bottles back (there is a 2$ deposit on each) and making it to the store during its 9-5ish hours isn't convienient.

I guess I'll be scanning the shelves of our supermarket for alternatives next time we go shopping.
